On May 21, 1960, Mohanlal Viswanathan was born in the Keralan village of Elanthoor, in the Pathanamthitta district. He is the youngest child of Santhakumari and Viswanathan Nair, a former Kerala government law secretary and official. Pyarelal, his older brother, passed away in 2000 while participating in a military drill. His maternal uncle Gopinathan Nair chose the name “Mohanlal” for him after first deciding to call him Roshanlal. But his father did not give him their last name.
