Early life
On May 21, 1960, Mohanlal Viswanathan was born in the Keralan village of Elanthoor, in the Pathanamthitta district. He is the youngest child of Santhakumari and Viswanathan Nair, a former Kerala government law secretary and official. Pyarelal, his older brother, passed away in 2000 while participating in a military drill. His maternal uncle Gopinathan Nair chose the name “Mohanlal” for him after first deciding to call him Roshanlal. But his father did not give him their last name. His father insisted that he should not use their caste name—Nair—as their last name, as they all did. Growing up in his paternal home in Thiruvananthapuram, Mohanlal was raised in Mudavanmugal. Film career
