Loyd, who was born in Lincolnwood, Illinois, started all four years for Niles West High School in Skokie, Illinois. During her time there, she averaged 24.8 points and 11.9 rebounds per game, scored 3,077 points in her career, and helped the team to a 93–31 record. She was voted ESPN’s women’s college basketball player of the year during her last season at Notre Dame, where the Fighting Irish made it to the NCAA title game for the second straight year. Professional career

The Seattle Storm selected Loyd first overall in the 2015 WNBA draft. Sue Bird, a legendary veteran point guard, was her teammate. Prior to entering the WNBA, Loyd was a point guard; however, since Bird was already a point guard for the Storm, Loyd had to play shooting guard. In her debut season with the Storm, Loyd also served as a backup point guard. Loyd was the starting point guard during the regular season while Bird rested for the final seven games. During her debut season, Loyd made 34 appearances for the Storm, starting 23 of them. She averaged 10.7 points per game during the season, which earned her the WNBA Rookie of the Year Award.

National team career

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to postpone the 2020 Summer Olympics until the summer of 2021 in late March 2020. Loyd was added to Team USA’s 12-man roster for the 2020 summer Olympics on June 21, 2021. After defeating Japan 90-75 in the championship game, she and Team USA went on to capture the gold medal in the competition. Loyd was once more selected to the American women’s Olympic squad to compete in the Summer Olympics in France in June 2024. In the final, the United States defeated France 67–66, giving Loyd her second straight gold medal and the United States their eighth consecutive gold medal.
