Club career

Ederson, who was born in Osasco, São Paulo, began playing football in 2008 with the local team São Paulo FC. He spent one season there before moving to Portugal to play for Benfica. He played as a junior for two years at the age of sixteen before being released in 2011 and eventually joining Ribeirão, a team in the Second Division. Ederson signed a deal with Rio Ave, a Primeira Liga team, in the summer of 2012, and stayed there for another year. After many strong outings and a call-up to the Brazil under-23 team, he inked a new deal with the team in April 2015, which would keep him there until 2019. Ederson returned to the Portuguese champions Benfica on June 27, 2015. He then formally signed a five-year contract with the team in July.

During the 2015–16 season, Júlio César, a fellow countryman and international, defended Ederson as a second choice in the starting lineup. International career

For the Copa América Centenario, Ederson was included in Brazil’s provisional roster; however, an injury kept him out of the starting lineup. On October 10, 2017, he made his debut for the national team in a 3–0 victory over Chile in a 2018 World Cup qualifier. He was included in Tite’s final 23-man roster for the 2018 World Cup in Russia in May. Brazil’s 23-man roster for the 2019 Copa América includes Ederson. At the 2021 Copa América, he made his major tournament debut for Brazil in June 2021, starting and maintaining a clean sheet in a 4-0 group stage victory over Peru despite five substitutions made by Tite. He was selected over Alisson Becker in the quarterfinal match against Chile, and they won that game.
