Her father, Donald Carl Jacobs, was a World War II bank teller and U.S. Navy signalman who later advanced in the banking industry by attending business school with the help of the G.I. Bill. Prior to his father and other family members leaving the Sicilian village of Gesso, his family name had been Giacoppo (or a variant thereof).
