Early and personal life
In the Punjabi city of Amritsar, India, Sharma was born Kapil Punj to a Punjabi family. In the Punjab Police, his mother Janak Rani is a homemaker, while his father Jeetendra Kumar Punj served as a head constable. 2004 saw the death of his father at Delhi’s AIIMS, after he was diagnosed with cancer in 1997. He attended Hindu College in Amritsar as well as Shri Ram Ashram Senior Secondary School. A list of well-known Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar alumni includes him. There are two siblings of Sharma: Pooja Pawan Devgan is his sister, and Ashok Kumar Sharma is a police constable. At Jalandhar on December 12, 2018, Sharma wed Ginni Chatrath. Career
Sharma gained notoriety in 2007 when he became victorious in the third season of the comedy reality television show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, earning a monetary reward of ₹10 lakh (about ₹30 lakh or US$36,000 in 2023). He had previously appeared on the MH One channel’s Punjabi program Hasde Hasaande Ravo.Sharma claimed he relocated to Mumbai in order to pursue his singing career. After taking part in Comedy Circus on Sony, he won six seasons of the program.In 2008, Sharma appeared as a competitor in the program Ustaadon Ka Ustaad. He competed in the 2011 season of Zee TV’s singing reality show Star Ya Rockstar, placing runner-up.
Under his own production company, K9 Productions, Kapil debuted his own program, Comedy Nights with Kapil, on Colors TV in 2013. He portrayed the host of a made-up family program, Bittu Sharma. In addition, he served as host of the comedy series Chhote Miyan and the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 6. Veteran actor Amol Palekar presented Sharma with the Indian of the Year award in the entertainment category at the 2013 CNN-IBN Indian of the Year Awards.He performed live on stage in Oman that same year.The Delhi Election Commission designated him as the Brand Ambassador for the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.
Controversies
In a 2016 tweet, Sharma mentioned Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and claimed that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had accepted a bribe of five lakh rupees from him to build his office. “Yeh hain aapke achhe din, I have to pay 5 lacs to bribe the BMC office to make my office Narendra Modi, even though I have been paying 15 crores in income tax for the last five years,” he tweeted. The head of BMC’s vigilance section responded by asking him for the names of the bribers and promising to take tough measures against them. Subsequently, it came to light that Sharma was engaging in illicit activities related to work being done on his properties. He received a cease-work notification from BMC, asking him to cease.
He was ordered to tear down the unlawful construction within the next 24 hours after discovering unauthorized expansions being built on his two Andheri houses. BMC officials said that Kapil Sharma had made interior changes to his homes and office without BMC’s legal consent when they demolished portions of the additions on August 4, 2016.
Activism
Sharma is well renowned for his work to advance animal rights. In order to encourage the adoption of stray cats and dogs, he participated in a PETA campaign alongside the Comedy Nights with Kapil cast. He took in a homeless dog, a Mumbai police canine that had retired, in July 2014. Additionally, he has run nationwide campaigns to protect elephants that are abused.

• In 2015, he was accused of misbehaving with his female co-stars (Monali Thakur, Tanishaa Mukherjee, etc.) during an event related to International Marathi Film Festival Awards 2015. Initially, he refused to comment, however, he later tweeted that, “I fall, I rise, I make mistakes, I live, I learn, I’ve been hurt but I am alive. I am human, I am not perfect but I am thankful (sic)”
• After the telecast of few initial episodes of The Kapil Sharma Show, nurses from various medical colleges and hospitals in Amritsar registered a complaint at a police station alleging that the show has demeaned their profession by objectifying them, such as Rochelle Rao portraying the character of a glamorous nurse, which led to people raising objections.
• On 9 September 2016, his tweet alleging corruption in the Shiv Sena- and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) created controversy, after which Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis replied on twitter by saying that, “Kapilbhai pls provide all info. Have directed MC, BMC to take the strictest action. We will not spare the culprit.”
• In December 2015, an FIR lodged was against him for destroying mangroves near his Versova residence in Mumbai.
• In March 2017, Kapil Sharma, who was reportedly drunk, was accused of being abusive to Sunil Grover on a flight from Melbourne, Australia. A few days later, Kapil admitted on Facebook that he had an ‘argument’ with Sunil and questioned the intentions of eyewitnesses who claimed that he had assaulted Sunil. In reply to which, Sunil posted a message on Facebook as given below.
• In April 2018, he had filed an F.I.R. against his former managers Preeti and Neeti Simoes and the editor of entertainment news portal ‘Spotboye,’ Vicky Lalwani, for maligning his image in media. Later, the F.I.R. got leaked online and was shown by Zee News. Kapil also mentioned that Preeti had threatened him to pay ₹25 lakh or otherwise she will create more tension for him. Vickey Lalwani also filed a non-consignable complaint against Kapil Sharma for using abusive language and threatening him over the phone. Sharma even tweeted on Friday with objectionable words against Lalwani.
• In July 2022, Sai USA Inc filed a lawsuit against Kapil Sharma for breach of contract from his 2015 tour of North America. Reportedly, he failed to perform in one of the six cities he had promised to and did not compensate for the loss. |
