Hemant Soren’s parents were Roopi and Shibu Soren. Shibu was a past leader of Jharkhand. Hemant was born in Nemara in 1975, which used to be part of Bihar’s Ramgarh district but is now in Jharkhand. He has two siblings: sister Durga Soren and younger brother Basant Soren, who is an MLA from Dumka constituency in Jharkhand. Hemant is the third child. In 1994, he started his political journey by joining the JMM. Hemant got his first seat in the Jharkhand Assembly from the Barhait constituency in 2005 and won again in 2009 and 2014. He briefly served as a Rajya Sabha member from 2009 to 2010. In 2013, with backing from Congress and RJD, he became the youngest Chief Minister of Jharkhand. When BJP came into power in 2014 with Raghubar Das as CM, Hemant became the Opposition Leader in the Jharkhand Assembly.
He left Rajya Sabha, then became Deputy Chief Minister under Arjun Munda in BJP. The alliance ended, leading to President’s rule. Shortly after becoming the 13th Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren allocated important roles to his cabinet members, keeping significant departments for himself and assigning key portfolios to both new and seasoned ministers. Just a few days after taking office as the 13th Chief Minister of Jharkhand upon his bail release related to a money laundering case tied to a supposed land scandal, Hemant Soren swore in his 12-member cabinet as ministers on Monday.

Early life
Soren was born in Nemara in Ramgarh district, Bihar (now in Jharkhand) to Roopi and Shibu Soren, who is the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and founder-president of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Hemant has two brothers and a sister and is the third child in the family. His siblings include Durga Soren, Anjali Soren, and Basant Soren, who is also an MLA from Dumka constituency in Jharkhand. Hemant completed his Intermediate education at Patna High School, Patna, Bihar. According to the affidavit submitted to the Election Commission, Hemant initially enrolled in BIT Mesra, Ranchi for Mechanical Engineering but later discontinued his studies.
Career
He served as a Rajya Sabha member from June 24, 2009, to January 4, 2010, before beginning his political journey as an MLA on December 23, 2009. From September 11, 2010, to January 8, 2013, he held the position of Jharkhand deputy CM.
Chief Minister (2013-2014)
On 15 July 2013, he assumed office as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand with backing from Congress and RJD following the lifting of President’s rule. He was re-elected as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand in December 2019 and took the oath on 29 December.

On January 30, 2024, he eventually arrived at his official residence in Ranchi, Jharkhand, acknowledging his strong connection with his constituents. Having evaded nine Enforcement Directorate summonses in the past, Hemant Soren was apprehended by the authorities on January 31, 2024. Subsequently, he submitted his resignation to the Governor of Jharkhand, C. P. Radhakrishnan, who appointed Champai Soren as his successor.
