Vijay Shankar Biography 2025
Vijay Shankar, an Indian cricketer, comes from a family with a cricketing background. His father and brother Ajay have both played cricket at the lower-division level for Tamil Nadu. Representing the Tamil Nadu State cricket team, Shankar was born on January 26, 1991, in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu.
Known for his middle-order batting and medium-pace bowling skills, he earned a spot in the national squad. Making his debut in first-class cricket in 2012, Shankar gained attention two years later for his impressive performances, particularly in the 2014–15 Ranji season where he scored 577 runs at an average of 57.70, including notable scores of 111, 82, 91, and 103 in the knockouts. With consistent improvement in his game over the seasons, Shankar’s talents were recognized, leading to his selection for the Indian national team.
Vijay was selected for the national team in 2017 to replace Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the Test team for the series versus Sri Lanka but did not play any matches. He made his debut in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy against Sri Lanka, where he faced criticism for his failure to hit boundaries in the final match against Bangladesh. Vijay considered this incident embarrassing and a learning experience. In 2019, he stepped in for Hardik Pandya in the last two ODI matches against Australia and the entire limited-overs series in New Zealand due to Pandya’s suspension for controversial remarks on a TV show.
Shankar’s inclusion in India’s 2019 ODI World Cup squad stirred controversy due to him being chosen ahead of Ambati Rayudu. BCCI chief selector MSK Prasad defended the decision, citing Shankar’s versatility as a three-dimensional player. Rayudu responded sarcastically on Twitter. In the IPL, Shankar debuted for Chennai Super Kings in 2014, playing only one match that season. He later represented various franchises before joining Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2017, where he scored his first half-century. After stints with Delhi Capitals and a return to Sunrisers Hyderabad, he won the IPL with Gujarat Titans in 2022, playing a minor role. In 2023, his impact as a substitute saw him playing a more significant part in the tournament.
