Vijay debuted for Tamil Nadu at 21 in a List-A match against Andhra in February 2012, scoring 6 runs and taking no wickets. In his first-class debut, Vijay scored 63 runs and took 2 wickets. He then scored an unbeaten century in the following match, marking his arrival.
