Iyer played cricket for Trent Bridge in 2014. He played three matches while on a tour to the UK, scoring 297 runs at an average of 99, with a career-high score of 171, setting a new team record. In November 2014, Iyer made his Mumbai List A debut while competing in the 2014–15 Vijay Hazare Trophy. In that competition, he scored 273 runs at an average of 54.60. In December 2014, Iyer debuted in first-class cricket as part of the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy. In his first Ranji season, he amassed 809 runs at an average of 50.56, with two centuries and six fifties. He finished seventh in the Ranji Trophy rankings for 2014–15.
International Career
In advance of the fourth Test match against Australia in March 2017, Iyer was added to the Indian Test team as a replacement for Virat Kohli. In the fourth test, he was brought on as a replacement fielder and outwitted Steve O’Keefe for eight runs. Iyer was included in the Indian Twenty20 International (T20I) team for their series against New Zealand in October 2017.
On November 1, 2017, he made his India T20I debut against New Zealand, although he did not bat. Iyer was included in the India One Day International (ODI) team roster for their series against Sri Lanka in November 2017. On December 10, 2017, he played his first-ever ODI for India against Sri Lanka. In the Mohali 2nd ODI against Sri Lanka, he struck 88 from 70 balls.
