Melissa Viviane Jefferson was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 27, 1988. Her family relocated to Houston, Texas when she was ten years old. She received classical training as a flutist for eight years, starting at the age of ten and continuing until her graduation from Alief Elsik High School in 2006, during which she began rapping. At 14, she founded the music group Cornrow Clique with her friends. It was during this period that she adopted the nickname “Lizzo”, derived from “Lissa”, inspired by Jay-Z’s “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)”. While in college, she focused on classical music and flute at the University of Houston. Following her father’s passing at 21, she lived in her car for a year while pursuing a career in the music industry. Between 2009 and 2010, she sang and played the flute in the jazz/prog rock band Ellypseas. Lizzo left college and relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2011.
