According to the oldest records, Sheffield and Hallam Football Club played the first-ever match in 1857, with Sheffield coming out on top 2-0. Two further known early football matches were played between Sheffield and London in 1866 and 1871. There were discrepancies between the north and south at this period, and the game’s rules were not established.
