Herbert Johnson was Saunders’ high school coach. For their achievements, they were chosen as the Gatorade Female Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
Saunders continued his education at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale, Illinois, and later transferred to the University of Mississippi, where he was a member of the track squad for the Ole Miss Rebels.
