Early Life
Leith was born in Cape Town, South Africa. Her father, Sam Leith, worked for African Explosives, a subsidiary of ICI, where he produced dynamite for mining and eventually became a director. Her mother, Margaret “Peggy” Inglis, was an actress. From the age of five to seventeen, Leith attended St Mary’s School, Waverley, an independent boarding school for girls in Johannesburg run by Anglican nuns. She graduated with first-class matriculation and went on to study at the University of Cape Town. However, she struggled to commit to courses in drama, fine art, architecture, or French. Eventually, she convinced her parents to allow her to attend the Sorbonne (officially the University of Paris) to improve her French while studying the Cours de Civilisation Française. It was during her time in Paris that she realized her passion for a career in the food industry.
