Early Life and Family

Louis Troy Austin was born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England, on 24 December 1991, to 18-year-old Johannah “Jay” Poulston and Troy Austin, who left when Louis was an infant. He became estranged from his father and later adopted his stepfather Mark Tomlinson’s surname, officially changing his name to Louis William Tomlinson. He grew up with four younger half-sisters: Charlotte, Félicité (2000–2019), and twins Phoebe and Daisy, from Poulston’s marriage to Mark. He also has three additional half-siblings: a younger paternal half-sister, Georgia, and twins Doris and Ernest (born 2014) from Poulston’s relationship with Dan Deakin, whom she later married.

He attended The Hayfield School and later Hall Cross School (now Hall Cross Academy), both in Doncaster. After failing his first year of A levels at Hayfield, he restarted his studies at Hall Cross. During his youth, Tomlinson held several jobs, including working at a Vue cinema and serving as a waiter in the hospitality suites at Doncaster Rovers football stadium. While at Hall Cross, he participated in various musical productions, which fueled his ambition and determination.

Although he didn’t progress as a solo competitor, he was invited to join a group with fellow contestants Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Harry Styles. They spent two weeks preparing for the final auditions and named themselves One Direction.

One Direction became one of the most successful acts from a reality series, selling over 70 million albums worldwide since their formation in 2010. The group released five commercially successful studio albums. From June 2013 to June 2014, they generated $75 million in revenue, and from June 2014 to 2015, that number rose to $130 million. Their “Where We Are” Tour grossed $282 million, making it one of the highest-grossing tours for a vocal group.
