Born in Toronto, Canada, on November 17, 1944, Lorne David Lipowitz is the son of Florence (née Becker) and Abraham Lipowitz. Contrary to some sources that claim he was born on a kibbutz in what was then British Mandate Palestine, his family immigrated to Toronto when he was an infant. Michaels grew up in Toronto with his two younger siblings. He attended Forest Hill Collegiate Institute and graduated from University College, Toronto, with a degree in English in 1966.
