Neeraj Chopra Biography 2024: Indian track and field athlete SubedarNeeraj Chopra PVSM VSM, born on December 24, 1997, is the current world and Olympic champion in the men’s javelin throw. In addition to becoming the first Asian athlete to win gold in his event at the World Championship, he is the first Asian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in javelin. Chopra is the first Indian track and field athlete to win an Olympic gold medal. He is a junior commissioned officer in the Indian Army. In addition, he is the first Indian track and field athlete to win in the World Under-20 Championships. In 2016, he established a world record with his 86.48-meter throw, making history as the first athlete from India to do so.

Chopra competed in both the 2018 Asian Games and the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where she won gold medals in both competitions while carrying the flag in the latter. He is the youngest Indian to ever win an Olympic gold medal in an individual event, one of only two Indians to have won an individual gold medal at the Olympics (the other being Abhinav Bindra), and the only person to have won gold on his Olympic debut as of 2023. He became the second Indian to win a medal at a World Athletics Championship with his silver medal at the 2022 competition.Later on, at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, he earned India’s first gold medal, and in the 2022 Asian Games, he won the second gold.

Early life & Education

In the Haryanvi Ror family of Khandra, a village in Panipat, Haryana, Neeraj Chopra was born. His family is primarily in the agricultural business, and he has two sisters. He attended BVN Public School for his education. After completing his studies at Dayanand Anglo-Vedic College in Chandigarh, he enrolled in Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, Punjab, in 2021 to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree.

With Chopra’s South Asian Games success and future potential in mind, the Indian Army extended an invitation for him to join the Rajputana Rifles directly as a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) with the rank of Naib Subedar. Under the sports quota, he accepted the offer and enlisted in the army.

Athletics Career

Chopra’s father registered him in a gymnasium at Madlauda after the kids there made fun of him for being overweight as a child. He was then enrolled in a gym in Panipat. After witnessing some javelin throwers while playing at Shivaji Stadium in Panipat, he started throwing himself.

Chopra went to the Panipat Sports Authority of India (SAI) facility, where in the winter of 2010, Ghaziabad’s javelin thrower Akshay Choudhary and Neeraj trained as early potential. Choudhary became Chopra’s first coach after he saw that he was driven and could throw 40 metres without any training. A couple more seasoned competitors who had trained under a javelin coach in Jalandhar, along with Choudhary, taught Chopra the fundamentals of the sport. In the district, he quickly took home his first medal, a bronze.

Neeraj Chopra: Awards

In 2020, he was honoured with the Vishisht Seva Medal at the Republic Day celebration and the Arjuna Award in 2018. Neeraj is the only Indian individual gold winner to earn an Olympic gold medal in track and field, after only Abhinav Bindra.
