During the 2014–15 Ranji season, his exceptional batting and spin bowling skills earned him a position in the India A team for the home series against South Africa and Bangladesh. His strong performances in domestic cricket also brought him to the attention of the national selectors, leading to his selection for the Indian ODI team’s 2016 tour of Zimbabwe. Jayant made his debut against New Zealand that same year, impressively taking a wicket with an impressive economy rate of 2.00 after bowling four overs. Following his success in the Ranji Trophy, Jayant’s IPL career took off in 2014 when he was purchased by the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) at the IPL auction, although he faced challenges in securing a spot in the starting lineup.
The versatile player participated in only 10 matches for the team across three seasons before being let go. In the next season, he was acquired by the Mumbai Indians for IPL 2019. Despite securing two IPL victories with the team, he once again had a limited role as a utility player, featuring in just nine matches and taking four wickets by the conclusion of the 2021 season. Following this, he was released prior to the major auction.
He was purchased by the Gujarat Titans in February 2022 but did not contribute to their successful campaign in IPL 2022. Eventually, he made his debut in the 2023 season against Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow. The bowler failed to secure any wickets during his only appearance for the team in two seasons.
In the 2014 IPL auction, Jayant was purchased by the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for INR 10 Lakhs. He remained with them until 2018 when he was transferred to Mumbai Indians for the 2019 IPL season. Jayant was selected for the India Green team for the 2019–20 Duleep Trophy in August 2019. Despite being part of the Delhi Capitals squad in the 2018 Indian Premier League, he did not get a chance to play. In February 2022, the Gujarat Titans acquired him in the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League tournament. He commenced his stint with Middlesex on September 1, 2023.
Jayant joined India’s Test squad in September 2016 for the series against New Zealand. He later made his Test debut against England, where he achieved his first Test wicket. Jayant has proven to be a valuable all-rounder for the team, showcasing his batting skills alongside his bowling expertise. He even captained India’s team for the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup.
