Rilee Rossouw Profile
Rilee Rossouw, a left-handed batsman with agile wrists reminiscent of subcontinental players, initially gained attention during the 2008 Under-19 World Cup. While he didn’t dominate the tournament, he showcased his talent by scoring 136 runs in six matches, including two half-centuries as South Africa made it to the final.
Before the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia, Rossouw debuted in First-Class cricket by top-scoring for Free State against Easterns in Bloemfontein. He went on to achieve a remarkable feat by scoring the fastest triple century in South African domestic cricket history in March 2010. His outstanding form continued that season with Rossouw accumulating 1,261 runs at an impressive average of 57.61. Rossouw also caught the eye during the Champions League T20 in 2009 when he scored a quick 44 runs off 19 balls against Trinidad and Tobago.
Rossouw’s performances in domestic cricket led to his selection for the national team in 2014. He debuted in ODIs against Zimbabwe and in T20Is against Australia the same year. Despite signing a Kolpak deal with Hampshire in 2017, he eventually made a successful return to South Africa’s T20I side in 2022 after the end of Kolpak agreements due to the UK’s departure from the European Union.
After a 6-year absence, Rossouw made a successful comeback to the South African team. He scored an unbeaten 96 off 55 balls in his second innings against England in a T20I. Shortly after, he achieved his first T20I century by scoring 100* from 48 deliveries against India. His place in South Africa’s 2022 T20 World Cup squad was assured, and he further proved his skills with another century against Bangladesh in the opening match of the tournament.
Rossouw was initially signed by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011 but did not play until 2014 when he replaced Nic Maddinson. He played only 2 games in that season and 3 in the following one before taking a break. In the 2022 IPL Auction, following impressive performances in leagues like the PSL and BPL, as well as notable contributions to his national team, he was acquired by the Delhi Capitals for INR 4.6 crore.
