Early Life
Betts’ parents chose his name to create the initials MLB, reflecting their love for Major League Baseball. His nickname, Mookie, was inspired by his parents watching former NBA player Mookie Blaylock shortly after his birth; interestingly, Betts has never met Blaylock. When Betts faced difficulties joining Little League due to his small stature, his mother started her own team to ensure he could play. In 2010, during his junior year at John Overton High School in Nashville, Betts had an impressive batting average of .548 and stole 24 bases. That November, he committed to the University of Tennessee on a baseball scholarship.
At Overton, Betts excelled in basketball as well, earning MVP honors in the District 12-AAA league during his senior season while averaging 14.1 points, nine assists, four rebounds, and three steals per game. He was named Class AAA All-City Player of the Year for the Nashville metropolitan area and received MVP recognition in the District 12-AAA tournament during his junior year. Additionally, Betts showcased his bowling skills, being named Tennessee Boys Bowler of the Year in 2010 with a high score of 290.
