Early life and education
Phelps grew up in the neighboring Towson community of Rodgers Forge after being born in Baltimore, Maryland. He went to Towson High School, Dumbarton Middle School, and Rodgers Forge Elementary. Phelps is the third kid and youngest. Deborah Sue “Debbie” Phelps, née Davisson, is his mother and the principal of a middle school. In the 1970s, Michael Fred Phelps, his father, tried out for the Washington Redskins and was a retired Maryland State Trooper who also played football in high school and college. Phelps is descended from Welsh, Scottish, German, Irish, and English people. At the age of nine, his parents separated in 1994, and his father got married again in 2000. Later, Phelps disclosed that the divorce had a very bad effect on him, his siblings, and his connection with his parents.
Phelps started swimming at the age of seven, in part as a way to release his energy and partially due to the influence of his sisters. “The only reason I ever got in the water was because my mom wanted me to just learn how to swim,” he said after retiring in 2016. Swimming career
Since the age of eleven, Phelps has trained with Bob Bowman. Florida State University recruited Bowman as a swimmer in 1983 and 1985. According to Phelps, Bowman’s orderly and disciplined manner reminded him of a drill sergeant. Phelps stated, “Working with Bob on my training has been the best decision I’ve ever made.” Not for anyone else will I swim.” Jon Urbanchek retired from coaching the University of Michigan, and Bowman was brought in to take over as head coach following the 2004 Summer Olympics. Although Phelps did not pursue a degree, he trained with Bowman at Michigan for four years. Phelps assisted coaches at Michigan on a volunteer basis. Following the Summer Olympics in 2008, Bowman took a job as CEO of the Baltimore.
