Who Is Pan Zhanle? Chinese Swimmer Etches New World Record Against Kyle Chalmers at Paris Olympics

“I didn’t plan to break it. I aimed to keep it for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.” At the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, Pan Zhanle surprised everyone by setting a fantastic 100 freestyle World Record of 46.80 at just 19 years old. His goal was simple: win an Olympic gold and set a new world record in Paris. During the competition against Kyle Chalmers, Zhanle took lane 4 while Chalmers was in lane 5. Despite missing the finals narrowly, Zhanle remained determined. When the race started, he took the lead and finished with a remarkable time of 46.40, setting a new World Record and winning China’s first gold in the sport in Paris. It was truly a memorable day for Zhanle as an Olympian!

Setting world records comes naturally to Pan Zhanle

The big event at Paris Arena was the men’s 100m freestyle finals. Pan, Kyle, and David competed. Pan faced experienced swimmers but stayed confident. Records were only broken in Paris before. Pan aimed for a new world record and gold. He trained hard to improve weaknesses. During the heats, he nearly missed the top-16 spot. History repeated for the Aussie, coming second with 47.48. He seemed unhappy after the race. A fan noticed, ‘Chalmers looks quiet, maybe upset about his performance and tired.’ He only smiled while hugging his fiancee. In the 2020 Tokyo Games, he faced a similar situation; he placed behind Caeleb Dressel. Dressel set a record of 47.02 seconds, while Chalmers finished in 47.08.

The 19-year-old has added yet another milestone

Pan Zhale always knew he was destined for greatness. His love for swimming began at 4 years old. In France, he excelled in the water. Before winning his first Olympic gold, he achieved impressive milestones. As a 7-time Asian medalist, he set records in the 200m, 100m, and 50m freestyle events. In 2023, he had a remarkable season and later won 4 gold medals at the 2024 World Championship in various swimming categories. Zhale made history by securing his country’s first medal in the 4x100m freestyle event. He then surpassed his own record with new achievements and awards in France.
