Early Life and Education

Waithe was born in Chicago, Illinois. Her father, Lawrence David Waithe, passed away when she was 15. Her paternal great-grandfather, Winston Waithe, emigrated from Barbados to Boston in 1921. Though Waithe initially did not aspire to act, she knew from the age of seven that she wanted to become a television writer, a goal she received strong support for from her mother and grandmother. Her parents divorced when she was three.

Waithe and her sister grew up on the South Side of Chicago until she was 12, attending a mostly African-American elementary magnet school, Turner-Drew, before moving to Evanston, where she completed middle school at Chute Middle School. She graduated from Evanston Township High School and earned a degree in Cinema and Television Arts from Columbia College Chicago in 2006. During her time in college, she was particularly influenced by faculty playwright Michael Fry. To gain more experience in the industry, Waithe worked at a movie theater, Best Buy, and Blockbuster.
