Early Life and Education
Born Lauren Cecelia Gofton on 28 April 1978, Laverne grew up in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, in a large family. Her father, Leslie Gofton, was a sociology lecturer at Newcastle University, and her mother, a teacher. Her paternal grandfather was a shipbuilder, while her maternal grandfather was a coalminer. Laverne first attended St Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary School in 1982, where she befriended Marie Nixon, who later became a guitarist in Kenickie. She then attended St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic School from 1989 to 1994, where she and Nixon met Emma Jackson. From 1994 to 1996, she studied at City of Sunderland College.

Career
While attending college, Laverne, Nixon, and Jackson, along with Laverne’s brother Peter, formed the band Kenickie at the age of sixteen. They adopted stage names, with Laverne becoming “Lauren Laverne” (originally “Lauren Le Laverne”), and the others using the names Marie du Santiago, Emmy-Kate Montrose, and Johnny X. Initially part of the Slampt label and the local punk scene, Kenickie later signed with EMI. The band achieved four top-40 hit singles and a top-10 album.
Laverne, Du Santiago, and Montrose became known not only for their music but also for their witty and sharp onstage banter and interview styles, making them popular on comedy panel shows like Never Mind the Buzzcocks, where Laverne later appeared on Have I Got News for You. Laverne released a solo EP, Take These Flowers Away, and contributed a version of “In the Bleak Midwinter” to the It’s a Cool, Cool Christmas album.
