Early Life
Pharrell Williams was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on April 5, 1973, the eldest of three sons of teacher Carolyn and handyman Pharoah Williams. His family has deep roots in Virginia and North Carolina, with one ancestor traveling to West Africa in 1831, which led to other relatives emigrating from the U.S. to Liberia in 1832. Pharrell met Chad Hugo at a seventh-grade summer band camp, where they both developed their musical skills—Pharrell played drums while Hugo played tenor saxophone. They later attended Princess Anne High School, participating in the school’s band, the Fabulous Marching Cavaliers. Pharrell graduated high school in 1991 and briefly attended Northwestern University before dropping out to pursue his music career.
