Born: 4 May 2000 (age 24 years), Seattle, Washington, United States
Current team: LA Clippers (#77 / Point guard, Shooting guard)
Porter was born in Seattle, Washington, to Ayanna and Bryan Kevin Porter Sr. His father was convicted of manslaughter for the shooting death of a 14-year-old girl in 1993 and tragically died in a shooting in 2004 when Porter Jr. was just four years old. As a result, he was raised by his mother in South Seattle, who became a significant role model for him.
Porter persuaded his mother to enroll him at Rainier Beach High School instead of O’Dea High School in Seattle, where his father had played sports, in order to honor that tradition. During his senior year, he averaged 27 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists, helping Rainier Beach achieve a 22–7 record. On March 3, 2018, he scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a Class 3A state championship game, although his team lost to Garfield High School. At the end of the season, he was named Washington Mr. Basketball by the state’s coaches association.
Porter was rated as a five-star recruit by 247Sports and Rivals, and a four-star recruit by ESPN. He was the highest-ranked player from Washington in the 2018 class and received offers from several NCAA Division I programs, including UCLA, Oregon, and Washington, before choosing to commit to USC. He became the first USC player to be rated a five-star recruit by Rivals since DeMar DeRozan in 2008.
