Kenneth Gainwell is an American football running back and kickoff returner for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2024 NFL season. The Eagles selected him with the 150th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. In his rookie year, Gainwell appeared in all 16 games, recording 33 receptions for 253 yards. He also played in Super Bowl LVII, where he had four receptions in the Eagles’ 38-35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Growing up in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Gainwell attended Yazoo County High School, where he played quarterback. Early Life
Gainwell grew up in Yazoo City, Mississippi, and attended Yazoo County High School, where he was a three-year starting quarterback for the Panthers. During his junior year, he passed for 1,184 yards and nine touchdowns while rushing for 1,292 yards and 20 touchdowns. Going into his senior season, Gainwell committed to play college football at Memphis, choosing it over offers from Ole Miss and Tulane. As a senior, he threw for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns and ran for 1,834 yards and 32 touchdowns. He was named Class 3A Mr. Football and led the Panthers to a 14–1 record and a spot in the Class 3A state championship game. Over his high school career, Gainwell accumulated 3,682 passing yards and 32 passing touchdowns, as well as 4,730 rushing yards and 75 rushing touchdowns, including a kickoff return for a touchdown.
College Career
Gainwell transitioned to running back during summer training camp and played in four games as a true freshman before deciding to redshirt for the remainder of the season. He finished the season with four carries for 91 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown run, and six receptions for 52 yards. In his redshirt freshman season, Gainwell became the Tigers’ starting running back after the departure of Tony Pollard. He earned the title of co-American Athletic Conference (AAC) Player of the Week on October 19, 2019, after rushing for 104 yards and a touchdown and catching nine passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns in a 47–17 victory over Tulane.
He finished the season with 1,459 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 231 carries, along with 51 receptions for 610 yards and three touchdowns. Gainwell was named the AAC Freshman of the Year and first-team All-AAC. He also earned second-team All-American honors from the Sporting News and the American Football Coaches Association, as well as being named National Freshman of the Year by the Football Writers Association of America.
