Early life and education

Sibal was born in Jalandhar, Punjab, on August 8, 1948. His family moved to India in 1947 as part of the division. In 1964, he relocated to Delhi. Following his education at Chandigarh’s St. John’s High School, he enrolled at Delhi’s St. Stephen’s College to pursue a B.A. He graduated with an M.A. in history from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi after receiving his LL.B. from the esteemed Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. In 1972, Sibal became a member of the Bar Association. He met the requirements for Indian Administrative Services in 1973 and received an appointment offer. However, he turned down the offer and instead to start his own legal business. He then enrolled at Harvard Law School to pursue an LL.M., which he finished in 1977.
