Born and raised in Bremen, Julian Brandt began his football journey with local club SC Borgfeld, later moving to FC Oberneuland. His potential was soon recognized, leading to his entry into the youth academy of VfL Wolfsburg. Brandt transferred to Bayer Leverkusen during the winter transfer window for a reported fee of €350,000. He signed a professional contract lasting until 2019. Brandt made his Bundesliga debut on 15 February 2014 against Schalke 04, coming on as a substitute for Son Heung-min in a 2–1 home loss.
Just three days later, he made his Champions League debut, appearing in the round of 16 against Paris Saint-Germain during the 2013–14 campaign. On 4 April 2014, he scored his first goal for Leverkusen, equalizing in a 2–1 defeat to Hamburger SV. During the 2015–16 Bundesliga season, Brandt began making more significant contributions.
