Wall was born on September 6, 1990, to Frances Pulley and John Carroll Wall Sr. When he was just a year old, his father, who had previously served time for second-degree murder, was convicted of armed robbery. Wall Sr. was released from prison on August 24, 1999, but sadly passed away from liver cancer just a month later at the age of 52. Wall’s older half-brother, also named John Carroll Wall, promised to take care of the family at their father’s funeral, but he was incarcerated the following year and was released in 2018.
During Wall’s childhood, his mother worked multiple jobs to support him, his sister Cierra, and his half-sister Tonya. The loss of his father led Wall to frequently rebel against authority figures and engage in disruptive behavior, including fights during middle school. He was also cited for breaking and entering as a teenager.
In the 2023-24 NBA season, John Wall does not receive a salary from any team. Throughout his career, however, he was one of the highest-paid players in the NBA. He initially signed a five-year deal with Reebok in 2010 worth $25 million before switching to Adidas, the parent company of Reebok, in 2013. He secured another five-year deal with Adidas in 2018. Additionally, he became the brand ambassador for New Era caps in May 2017. After his deal with Adidas expired, Wall opted not to renew, even turning down a $66 million extension offer. He has since worn Nike and Jordan shoes during games without formal endorsement agreements and has appeared in commercials, including one for McDonald’s.
