Usha Chilukuri was born in San Diego to Indian immigrants who spoke Telugu. Her parents immigrated to the United States in the 1980s from a village close to Pamarru in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, India. Her mother Lakshmi is a marine molecular biologist and biochemist who serves as Provost of Sixth College at the University of California, San Diego, while her father Radhakrishna “Krish” teaches at San Diego State University’s Department of Aerospace Engineering.
