Her passion for acting began in high school, where she became involved in an amateur acting group. In 1987, she further pursued her love of theatre by attending the National Theatre of Great Britain Summer Acting Programme at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. During this program, she had the opportunity to study under renowned teachers such as Peter Chelsom, Bardy Thomas, and Michael Joyce. After completing the summer program, Anderson returned to Chicago to finish her education at the Goodman Theatre School at DePaul University. Her big break came in 1993 when she was cast as Dana Scully in the iconic TV series The X-Files. Gillian Anderson was born in Chicago to Rosemary “Posie” Alyce (née Lane), a computer analyst and neurofibromatosis support leader, and Homer Edward “Ed” Anderson III, a film editing company owner. Soon after her birth, the family relocated to Puerto Rico and then to London, where they settled for a time while her father attended the London Film School. The family later moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, when Anderson was 11 years old, although they maintained ties to London. Growing up in Grand Rapids, Anderson had a rebellious phase, during which she experimented with punk culture and was arrested for an incident at her high school.
Despite an initial interest in marine biology, Anderson’s passion shifted to theatre, and she began acting in school and community productions. After high school, she attended The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1990. To support herself during her college years, Anderson worked at the Goose Island Brewery, which later named a beer after her, calling it “Gillian” in honor of her.
