Anne Jacqueline “Annie” Hathaway was born on November 12, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York City. Her father, Gerald, is a labor attorney, while her mother, Kate (née McCauley), is a former actress. Hathaway’s maternal grandfather was Joe McCauley, a Philadelphia radio personality. Hathaway was named after Shakespeare’s wife, according to The Daily Telegraph. She has two brothers: Michael, her older sibling, and Thomas, her younger brother. When Hathaway was six, her family relocated to Millburn, New Jersey, where she was raised.

Hathaway’s passion for acting began at age eight when she saw her mother perform as Fantine in the first national tour of Les Misérables. This sparked her interest in the stage, though her parents were initially hesitant about her pursuing an acting career. After this experience, her mother quit acting to focus on raising Hathaway and her brothers. Hathaway was raised in a Roman Catholic household with strong values, and she once aspired to become a nun.
