Early Life and College Career

Christie was born in Seattle, Washington, to John Malone and Norma Christie. Raised by his mother, he is biracial, with his father being Black and his mother White. He began playing basketball in middle school at Cascade Middle School and continued at Mark Morris High School in Longview, WA, during his freshman and sophomore years, after moving to Longview to live with his father, a former track star. Christie later attended Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, where he led the varsity basketball team to its first-ever Washington state championship in his senior year. He was also named the state’s high school player of the year.

After graduating from Rainier Beach High in 1988, Christie went on to study sociology at Pepperdine University. During his time at Pepperdine, he led the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances and averaged over 19 points per game in his final two seasons. He was named WCC Player of the Year twice.
