Deepak Dhar Biography: Indian theoretical physicist Deepak Dhar was born on October 30, 1951, and is well-known for his work on stochastic processes and statistical physics. He was the first Indian to receive the Boltzmann Medal in 2022, which is given out by IUPAP once every three years in appreciation of outstanding contributions to statistical physics. In 2023, Dhar received the Padma Bhushan. Dhar was elected as a fellow of The World Academy of Sciences and is the recipient of the TWAS prize. One of the highest honors in Indian science, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, was given to Dhar in 1991 for his contributions to the physical sciences by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the government of India’s primary scientific research organization. All three of the main Indian science academies—the Indian Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy, and the National Academy of Sciences, India—have chosen him as a fellow. He is currently a distinguished professor at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, in the department of physics.

Bio/Wiki

Murli Dhar and Rama Gupta welcomed Deepak into the world on October 30, 1951, in Pratapgarh, in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. Following his graduation in science from the University of Allahabad in 1970, Dhar went on to the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, where he obtained a master’s degree in physics in 1972. He relocated to the US and enrolled at California Institute of Technology to pursue his doctorate under the supervision of Jon Mathews. In 1978, he received his PhD and returned to India to begin working as a research fellow at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). Dhar joined the organization as a full-time fellow in 1980 following two years of study, a role he held until 1986 when he was elevated to the rank of reader.

Dhar held a number of posts at TIFR prior to his superannuation from regular employment, including associate professor (1991) and professor grades G through J (1995–2008). Between, he spent a year as a visiting scientist at the University of Paris for his sabbatical in 1984–1985 and a month as a Rothschild Professor at the Isaac Newton Institute in May 2006. Dhar is a distinguished professor at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Pune after retiring.

Profession(s) Producer and Businessman

Legacy

Dhar has studied on the statistical mechanics and kinetics of random lattices, concentrating his studies on statistical physics and stochastic processes. It is said that his work has expanded our understanding of the fields. He is recognized for having introduced the idea of the spectral dimension to the study of fractals and for helping to create a methodology that used real-space renormalization group techniques to determine their critical phenomena. This was the first time that nontrivial critical exponents on fractals were calculated using a mathematical apparatus.

Dhar collaborated with Ramakrishna Ramaswamy to solve the self-organized criticality Abelian sandpile model, and the two created a new model that became known as the Dhar-Ramaswamy model. He introduced the evolution operator while working on the directed-site animals-enumeration problem using the Bethe ansatz approach. This topic has now been studied by other scholars and is known as the Dhar directed-site animals-enumeration problem. Dhar also suggested models of metastable glassy states in stochastic development and showed that auto-correlation functions predominantly showed the gradual flipping of isolated unfrustrated clusters. Numerous articles have been written about his research, 113 of which are listed in the Indian Academy of Sciences’ online article repository.

Wife

Post-retirement, Dhar serves as a distinguished professor at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune. Dhar is married to Manju and the couple has two children “NASI fellows”. National Academy of Sciences, India.

In 1983, he was awarded the Indian National Science Academy’s Young Scientist Medal. In 1991, he was given the highest science honor in India, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. After a span of two years, he was chosen for the 1993 J. Robert Schrieffer Prize by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics. In 2001, Dhar was again recognized by INSA with the Satyendranath Bose Medal, and in 2002, The World Academy of Sciences awarded him the TWAS Prize.

In 1990, Dhar was chosen as a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, where he currently serves on the council. In 1995, he was recognized as a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, and in 1999, he was chosen as a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India. Dhar was elected to the World Academy of Sciences in 2006, and in 2007 he was chosen for the Science and Engineering Research Board’s J. C. Bose National Fellowship, which he will hold until 2017. As the first Indian to get the esteemed Boltzmann Medal, Dhar has been selected for the 2022 edition of the award. A scientist who has made outstanding contributions to the field of statistical physics is awarded it every.
