Club career
Mills went through Norwich City’s junior system before starting his career there. After failing to secure a regular spot in the team, he went to Charlton Athletic in March 1998. There, he played a part in the team’s thrilling 7–6 victory over Sunderland in the play-off final, which followed a 4–4 draw. This helped the team win promotion to the Premier League. Mills signed a £4.1 million contract with Leeds United in June 1999. He contributed to Leeds’ advancement to the UEFA Champions League Semifinal in 2000–01. At the Camp Nou, Mills made his Champions League debut as Leeds lost to Barcelona 4-0. Mills appeared in the 2004 Football League Cup final while on loan at Middlesbrough during the 2003–04 season.

After putting on a string of standout performances for Leeds United, Mills was name to his first England squad in 2001. He made his debut for the country on May 25, 2001, when he came on as a substitute in a Pride Park friendly against Mexico. In a friendly match against Italy on March 27, 2002, he made his debut for England. Following Gary Neville’s injury, Mills was select as England’s first-choice right-back for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and he participated in all five of England’s games.
