Early Life

Collinsworth was born in Dayton, Ohio, to Abraham Lincoln “Abe” Collinsworth and Donetta Browning Collinsworth. His father, known as “Lincoln” in high school, was one of Kentucky’s top high school basketball scorers and played for the Kentucky Wildcats “Fiddling Five,” who won the national championship in 1958. Both of Cris’s parents were educators; Donetta was a teacher, while Abe served as a high school teacher and coach before becoming a principal and later the superintendent of schools for Brevard County.

In 1963, when Cris was four years old, his family moved from Ohio to Melbourne, Florida. In 1972, they relocated to nearby Titusville, where Cris and his brother Greg attended Astronaut High School, where their father was the principal. At Astronaut High, Cris excelled in multiple sports and, during his senior year in 1976, won the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 3A 100-yard dash state championship and was named a high school All-American quarterback.
