Colby Covington Latest News
Colby Covington (17-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) had expressed intentions to call UFC executive Hunter Campbell on Monday to request a fight with Shavkat Rakhmonov. However, it seems the UFC had other plans for the 36-year-old welterweight. Instead, Covington will now face Joaquin Buckley (20-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) in a five-round main event at UFC on ESPN 63 on December 14 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. The matchup was announced by UFC president Dana White on Saturday.
Covington replaces Ian Machado Garry, who will now face Rakhmonov a week later, after champion Belal Muhammad pulled out of his scheduled fight. Covington’s most recent appearance was a failed title challenge against Leon Edwards in December, where he lost by unanimous decision. It was Covington’s third attempt at the welterweight title, and he remains 1-2 in his last three bouts. Meanwhile, Buckley, 30, will be looking to extend his winning streak to six as he headlines his first UFC event. His most recent victory came in October, when he knocked out Stephen Thompson.
