  • Nikhat was comfortably outclassed by the top seed
  • Only Lovlina and Nishant remain in medal contention for India in boxing

One of India’s top boxers, Nikhat Zareen, lost in the early rounds at Paris Olympics. She was defeated by Wu Yu from China in a clear match decision. Nikhat won against Maxi Kloetzer but couldn’t beat the Chinese boxer.

Nikhat Zareen lost in the first two rounds by split decision. She was outclassed in the final round, losing unanimously with all five judges supporting China’s Wu Yu. Nikhat couldn’t use her height advantage as Wu Yu defended skillfully. Wu looked fresh due to a first-round bye. Nikhat won against Maxi initially but struggled later. The draw in the 50kg category was tough for her. Despite being a world champion twice, she wasn’t seeded because the IOC doesn’t recognize IBA. It’s puzzling how the boxing seedings paired champions early on in the tournament.

India’s boxing performance at the Paris Olympics was mixed. Lovlina Borgohain and Nishant Dev reached the quarter-final. Lovlina won against Sunniva Hofstad in the 75kg category, close to securing a medal. Nishant defeated Jose Gabriel Rodriguez Tenorio in the Round of 16. Unfortunately, Amit Panghal, Jasmine Lamboria, and Preeti Pawar were eliminated early, dashing India’s boxing medal hopes in Paris.
