Born in 1944 in Beaufort, South Carolina, Oe Frazier grew up in the rural village of Laurel Bay with his sharecropper parents, Rubin and Dolly. He started working on a farm for a Bellamy family, who were white, when he was fifteen years old. Frazier knew he had to leave Beaufort after seeing Jim Bellamy beat a small black boy who had unintentionally damaged one of the family’s tractors. To earn some cash, he went to work at the nearby Coca-Cola plant. Later, he boarded a bus that was heading north. In the end, Frazier made Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his home. Between 1962 and 1964, Frazier won three Golden Gloves Heavyweight Championships during his prosperous amateur boxing career. His amateur record stood at 38-2 overall.
