Early Life and Education

Engelbert grew up in Collingswood, New Jersey, in a large family with five brothers and two sisters. She attended Collingswood High School and was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993. Her father worked as an IT manager, while her mother was a medical practice administrator. Engelbert graduated from Lehigh University in 1986 with a degree in accounting. While at Lehigh, she tried out for the basketball team as a walk-on under Hall of Fame coach Muffet McGraw and later became the team captain. She also played lacrosse and captained that team as well. After completing her degree, she earned her CPA certification and became a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Career

Catherine Engelbert joined Deloitte in 1986, where she worked until her retirement in 2019. She later took on the role of commissioner for the WNBA later that same year. In interviews, she credited Deloitte’s commitment to supporting women in the workplace as a significant factor in her career development. Before becoming CEO of Deloitte in March 2015, Engelbert served as chairman and CEO of Deloitte & Touche LLP, the firm’s audit subsidiary. Throughout her tenure at Deloitte, she held several senior positions, including national managing partner for regions at Deloitte & Touche, deputy national professional practice director, and financial accounting and reporting services quality risk manager. She became a partner in 1998.

On May 15, 2019, Engelbert was appointed as the first commissioner of the WNBA, with previous leaders having held the title of “president.” She officially began her tenure on July 17, 2019. Since then, Engelbert has focused on expanding the league, addressing player and team concerns, enhancing corporate partnerships, and preparing for upcoming negotiations regarding the WNBA’s media rights. Under her leadership, the league has experienced significant growth, including the addition of new teams such as the Golden State Valkyries, as well as plans for further expansion in Toronto and Portland.
