Early life
On November 27, 1957, Caroline Bouvier Kennedy was born at New York Hospital to Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy and John F. Kennedy, who was the senator from Massachusetts at the time. She has the names of her maternal great-great-grandmother, Caroline Ewing Bouvier, and her maternal aunt, Lee Radziwill. Caroline’s parents experienced a stillbirth of a daughter a year prior to her birth. John Jr., her younger brother, was born in 1960, not long before she turned three. In 1963, Patrick, a second sibling, passed away two days after his premature birth. Kennedy’s mother set up kindergarten programs for her to attend in the White House. She had a registration at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart before to the family’s relocation to New York. She completed her education at Concord Academy in Massachusetts in 1975 after attending The Brearley School and Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York City. She worked as a photographer’s assistant in Innsbruck, Austria during the 1976 Winter Olympics. She earned $156 a week ($784 in 2023 dollars) as a summer intern at the New York Daily News in 1977. Her duties included “delivering messages, changing typewriter ribbons, and fetching coffee for harried editors and reporters.” According to reports, Kennedy “sat alone on a bench for two hours on the first day before other employees even greeted.
