Early Life and Education
Born in Salinas, California, to Efraín and Isabel Velásquez, Caín’s father immigrated to the U.S. from Sonora, Mexico, as an undocumented immigrant. He later married Isabel, an American citizen, allowing Efraín to gain U.S. citizenship. Caín has two older siblings, Efraín Jr. and Adela, and was raised in Yuma, Arizona. He graduated from Kofa High School, where he had an impressive wrestling record of 110–10 and won the 5A Arizona Wrestling Championship twice. He also played football for three years, serving as captain of both his wrestling and football teams and playing linebacker.
After high school, Velásquez attended Iowa Central Community College, where he wrestled for one season and won the NJCAA National Championship in the heavyweight division. He then transferred to Arizona State University, where he competed for three seasons, amassing a record of 86–17. Velásquez earned All-American honors twice, placing 5th in 2005 and 4th in 2006. He graduated from ASU in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies.

Education and Early Career
Cain Velasquez was a standout athlete at Kofa High School, where he excelled in wrestling, boasting a 110–10 record and winning the 5A Arizona Wrestling Championship twice. In addition to wrestling, he played football for three years and served as captain of both teams during his senior year. He played as a linebacker in football.
After high school, Velasquez wrestled for one season at Iowa Central Community College, winning the NJCAA National Championship in the heavyweight division in 2001-2002. He then transferred to Arizona State University, where he wrestled for three seasons, achieving an 86–17 record. He placed fifth nationally in 2005 and fourth in 2006, training alongside future UFC fighters Ryan Bader and C.B. Dollaway. Velasquez graduated from ASU with a degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2006.

Career
After completing his education, Velasquez began training at the American Kickboxing Academy and made his mixed martial arts debut in 2006, defeating Esse Fujarczyk by TKO in the first round. He quickly faced Jeremiah Constant, who was undefeated at the time, and won by TKO in the first round as well. Velasquez fought Brad Morris at UFC 83 in 2008, winning by TKO in the first round. The following year, he faced Jake O’Brien at UFC Fight Night 14, securing another TKO victory in the first round. His impressive performance earned him a rematch with reigning UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, although he suffered a near rotator cuff injury during the bout.
In 2011, after recovering from his shoulder injury, Velasquez defended his Heavyweight title against Junior dos Santos but faced his first loss, being knocked out in under a minute. He later defeated Antonio Silva in a rematch before reclaiming victory over dos Santos. From 2015 to 2019, however, Velasquez faced a series of setbacks, losing matches against Fabricio Werdum and Francis Ngannou.
Personal Life
Velasquez married his long-time girlfriend Michelle in 2011. They welcomed their daughter, Coral Love Velasquez, in 2009, and their son in 2018. He is bilingual, fluent in both English and Spanish, and has appeared as a guest on Spanish-language shows such as Telemundo and Univision. He was also featured in Wisin & Yandel’s music video “Te Siento” and made an appearance on “Lopez Tonight.” In 2022, Velasquez was accused of shooting a man in Morgan Hill, California, resulting in non-life-threatening injuries. He was subsequently arrested and incarcerated in Santa Clara County for an unrelated offense.
