Early life
Burroughs comes from Winslow Township, New Jersey, specifically the Sicklerville neighborhood. At the age of five, he became the first person in his family to wrestle when he carried a wrestling flyer home from elementary school. He continued on to Winslow Township High School, where he participated in football, track, and wrestling as a three-sport athlete. Though he was a freshman and weighed 130 pounds, he gave up on his dream of being a wide receiver in the NFL to concentrate on wrestling. In his final year (2006), he won the NHSCA national championship, the state (NJSIAA) championship, two regional titles, and three district titles as a high school wrestler. With 115 victories and 20 defeats, he graduated.
Personal life
Burroughs follows Christ. He has discussed his beliefs in public, stating, “You will never feel fulfilled by a gold medal. A relationship with Jesus Christ is the most rewarding thing there is in life. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that no matter where you are in life, all you need to do is be content with what God has provided.” Beacon, Ora, Banner, and Rise are Jordan’s four children from his marriage to Lauren Burroughs, née Mariacher. Burroughs is a Buffalo Bills fan and enjoys football. Freestyle career
In April Burroughs competed at the senior level for the first time, finishing second behind Teyon Ware in the US University Nationals. Burroughs jumped right into the freestyle arena, participating at the US Open from April 7–10, just three weeks after graduating from college. To win the title, he thoroughly defeated all four of his opponents, including Bobby Nash and Nick Marable. At the annual Beat the Streets duel on May 5, he emerged victorious over Russia’s Aniuar Geduev. Burroughs won twice in a row against US University National Champion Andrew Howe at the US World Team Trials held from June 9–11. This allowed Burroughs to qualify for the US World Team at 74 kg. He then triumphed in all five of his match periods at the Ukrainian Memorial International tournament, which took place on July 23–24.

Challenges and Injuries
Burroughs sustained a number of injuries over his career. Despite breaking his ankle during training in 2013, he went on to win his third world title in a row following surgery.
