Zhang, who played for the Singapore National Team till 2012, was born in China and relocated to Singapore in 2003 at the age of 13, thanks to the Foreign Sports Talent Scheme. Zhang became a citizen of Singapore in 2007. She competed for Singapore in the 2009 Southeast Asian Games women’s team badminton competition, where the team took home a bronze medal. Following a year-long hiatus during which she participated in no competitions, she returned in 2013 with the intention of returning to the top level. Her contract with the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) was reportedly terminated in 2011 due to a claimed disagreement regarding curfew with head coach Luan Ching, who was then single.
Zhang continued to play the sport after relocating to Las Vegas in 2013 with her parents. She won singles titles at four international challenge events in the same year: the Carlton Irish Open International in Dublin; the Yonex USA International in Orlando, Florida; the Swiss International in Yverdon-les-Bains; and the Yonex Welsh International in Cardiff. She won in Peru, the US, Brazil, and the Netherlands in 2014, extending her winning streak for her new nation, the US. After winning the 2014 Brazil Open and 2014 Dutch Open Grandslams, she claimed her maiden Grand Prix victory at the 2014 U.S. Open Grand Prix Gold.

Who are Beiwen Zhang’s parents
Zhang was born in Anshan, Liaoning, China, to parents Zhang Weixun and Zhang Weixun. When she was eight years old, her parents encouraged her to play athletics. Her father supported her in participating in sports even though she was first afraid of the water. Zhang remarked, “My dad sent me to learn how to swim, but I’m not a fan of water.” They would just toss me into the sea to teach me. For a month, I cried every single day. She gave badminton a go as a result. Her father had the difficult choice to send her to Singapore at the age of 13 so she could play for their national team.
Zhang made the decision to give up the sport in 2010 after making significant progress. Zhang moved to Las Vegas in 2013, where she attended the Las Vegas Badminton Club for training. Zhang’s coach urged her to compete globally after observing her exceptional accomplishments. Zhang gladly began representing the US in international competitions after gaining US citizenship. She conveyed her happiness at being a member of Team USA.
