Hammon was born in Rapid City, South Dakota, where she began playing basketball at a young age, practicing with a Nerf ball alongside her older brother and father. Raised in a devout Christian household, she honed her skills on her local court. During her time at Stevens High School in Rapid City, she earned recognition as South Dakota Miss Basketball in her junior year and was named the South Dakota Player of the Year in her senior year, averaging 26 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 steals per game. Upon graduating in 1995, she was also voted female class athlete by her peers. Despite her accolades, Hammon initially attracted little attention from college recruiters, who deemed her too small and slow. Eventually, she caught the eye of an assistant coach at Colorado State University, leading her to commit to the Rams.
