Alex Smith was born on May 7, 1984, in Bremerton, Washington, and raised in La Mesa, California. His father, Douglas D. Smith, served as the executive director at Helix High School, where Alex was a student. As the starting quarterback for the Helix Highlanders during his junior and senior years, Smith led the team to a 25–1 record and secured two San Diego CIF section titles. He earned first-team all-conference and all-county honors and was named conference offensive player of the year and team MVP in both seasons.
At Helix, Smith set a school record with six touchdown passes in a single game and achieved the second-highest completion rate in San Diego CIF history. He also shared the field with future NFL star Reggie Bush.
