Born in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood, Dershowitz grew up in the Borough Park section. His parents, Claire (née Ringel) and Harry Dershowitz, were Orthodox Jews. At age 14, Dershowitz worked in a deli factory on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. He attended Yeshiva University High School, where he was known for challenging authority and playing basketball. Recalling his rebellious nature, he once joked that his teachers advised him to pursue a job that required “a big mouth and no brain”—so he became a lawyer.
Dershowitz earned his B.A. in political science from Brooklyn College in 1959, graduating magna cum laude.
