Early life

Hayes, the third son of Roger and Geri Hayes, was born in the Norwood, Bronx. His father is an Irish Catholic, and his mother is of Italian descent. While attending a Jesuit seminary in Chicago, his father relocated to New York, where he started community organizing in the Bronx. Roger Hayes is an associate commissioner in the NYC Department of Health who led community organizing for a number of years at the Community Service Society of New York. Hayes’s mother teaches at the NYC Department of Education and was a teacher in the past. Although Hayes was raised Catholic, he no longer considers himself to be religious and stopped going to church while in college.
