College career
From 2012 until 2015, Colbert was a player at the University of Texas in Austin. During his final year in 2016, he transferred to the University of Miami.
Professional career
Colbert was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL draft of 2017 in the seventh round (229th overall). was the 31st cornerback selected in the 2017 NFL Draft. Colbert signed a four-year, $2.48 million contract with the 49ers on May 4, 2017, which came with a $84,786 signing bonus. As a rookie, he started six games and participated in 14 games at free safety, totaling 37 tackles and five passes defensed. Colbert joined the 49ers as their starting free safety heading into the 2018 campaign. Before sustaining a high ankle sprain in Week 7, he participated in seven games, starting six of them. Oct. 22, 2018 saw him placed on injured reserve. On August 31, 2019, following the final roster cuts, Colbert was waived or injured and placed back on the team’s injured reserve.
Colbert signed a contract to join the Seattle Seahawks practice squad on September 18, 2019. 26 September 2019 saw him elevated to the active roster. On October 12, 2019, he was placed back on the practice squad after being waived. Colbert was signed by the Miami Dolphins on November 19, 2019, after being cut from the Seahawks practice squad. On March 20, 2020, Colbert re-signed with the Dolphins. August 16, 2020, saw his waived. On August 22, 2020, Colbert was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs. On September 5, 2020, at the final roster cuts, he was waived. The New York Giants claimed Colbert off waivers on September 6, 2020.
